Since its incorporation in 2013, Univercells has grown to over 30 team members, with profiles ranging from PhDs in molecular biology, to engineers, bioprocess specialists, technicians, and many more, with strong industrial track record.

Our strength resides in the collaboration of various profiles, combining the expertise of bioprocess development experts with seasoned engineers, to develop our fully-integrated process adaptable to various biologics.

José Castillo José Castillo on LinkedIn

What gets me up in the morning is the idea that every small change we enable has a meaningful impact on the way biologics will be manufactured all around the globe.

Chief Technical Officer

Jose is an experienced inventor endowed with strong managerial skills. After working as the Head of Viral Vaccine Industrialization at GSK Biologicals, he designed and developed bioreactors for bioproduction, which all have radically transformed the way the industry approaches cell culture. The first ones were developed at Artelis, a company started up by Hugues and Jose, and industrialized at ATMI LifeSciences and Pall Lifesciences where Jose held the position of Cell Culture Technologies Director.

With a general background in Chemical Engineering, Jose’s education includes a PhD in Applied Sciences from the Université libre de Bruxelles, and an entrepreneurship degree from the Solvay Business School.

As Univercells’ CTO, he is now the architect of highly efficient production processes that will make cell culture available and affordable for all. The goal is,  to disrupt the industry and become the leader of comprehensive manufacturing solutions.

Hugues Bultot Hugues Bultot on LinkedIn

I have experienced several great challenges in my career. Building up a team of change makers and being in a position to impact the global access to health is by far the most exciting of all.

Chief Executive Officer

With more than 15 years of experience in the life sciences and biotechnology industries, Hugues is a serial entrepreneur whose thirst for new challenges is never quenched. He has founded several startups, including Artelis and KitoZyme, that have led to successful takeovers.

He is a believer in the continuous learning process. One good illustration is that, on top of his successful career, he had been continuously earning academic degrees at prestigious schools such as INSEAD and MIT, all the way until 2010.

In 2013, he co-founded Univercells with Jose Castillo and Guillaume de Viron with the ambition to make biologics available and affordable to all.
